Patriots releases Brady and re-signs Tedy, Lonie and Kelley

The New England Patriots released their veteran player Tight End Kyle Brady but, re –signed three of its players. The re-signed players include the long snapper of the team, Lonie Paxton, Tedy Bruschi, the linebacker and Kelley Washington, the wide receiver. The patriots have not disclosed the details regarding the terms and conditions of the contract. Tedy was taken in the 1996 draft from Arizona and this will be his 13th season with the Patriots and was leading the team as captain from the year 2002. Bruschi is one of the best tackles Patriots ever had and he played very well in the year 2007. He has played 176 games and he will be the 10th player of the Patriots to spend more than 13 seasons with the team.

The last season game in which Bruschi was a co –captain allowed only 288.3 yards per game was the least for the Patriots in the past 28 years. Bruschi has a good career record with participation in many contests even in 5 super bowls. For Lonie Paxton this will be his 9th season with the Patriots and has played more than 125 games in his career. The field goal unit rate of Patriots has increased because of Lonie’s consistency in the game.

Patriots is Looking for Cornerback in the Draft

Patriots are heading to the draft season in April with an intention of filling the cornerback position in the team. Though, there is no clear-cut formula for selecting cornerbacks, Patriots were fortunate to draft two players successfully in the last decade. Ty Law was drafted in the year 1995 and Asante Samuel was taken, in 2003. Patriots were able to develop these players into really professional ones. In 2004 Ty Law left the Patriots team due to some problems in the contract and Samuel is planning to go into the free agent arena this season.

Samuel’s price in the free agent market will be greater as he played his last season with the New England team and got recognition as one of the best corners. Patriots are really in need for corners as Randall Gay is a free agent and may move to some other team and Ellis Hobbs was not able to show consistency in his play in the last season. They are looking for drafts to play for the top line as well as to add support to their second line up. It is expected that more than 30 players will be taken up by different teams within the draft weekend.

Appointments in Patriots

The Patriots has taken in coach Dom Capers as a special assistant. Nick Caserio has been appointed as the director of player personnel. Bill O’Brien was declared the receivers coach. Capers was till then the defensive coordinator of Miami Dolphin. Caserio was the wide receivers coach of the team. O’Brien was the coaching assistant of the team. The head coach of the team, Bill Belichik has remarked that it is an outstanding opportunity for the team to have Capers as a special assistant. The team is also excited about capitalizing on the experience of Bill O’Brien. Nick has been a part of the organization for long and the team looks forward to take advantage of his immense understanding of the game.

Capers has an experience of 36 years as a coach. He had worked for Carolina panthers, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jackson Ville jaguars and Miami Dolphins before he joined the Patriots. Caserio has been a part of the organization since 2001 and has served in the personnel department and as a coaching staff. He started his career at central Michigan after which he joined the Patriots. Bill O’Brien would be serving his first term as NFL position coach. Before joining the Patriots he served in Atlantic Coast conference, Georgia Tech, Duke and Maryland.

Zach Thomas is Looking for a New Employer

Zach Thomas who has left the Dolphins is looking for a new employer. The 34 year old Thomas, who is a popular line backer of Dolphins, is one of the most productive players Dolphins ever had in their team. But, Thomas missed most of the matches in the last season as he was suffering from migraines and concussions after he met with an accident in last October. Thomas feels that he is healthy and wants to play in 2008 with a team that has the potential of winning Super Bowl title.

The agent of Thomas, Drew Rosenhaus has announced that Thomas has got offers from different teams. They already had a meeting with the New England patriots and the team was keen to sign him right away. Zach Thomas is yet to decide on the offer made by Patriot as he has a meeting with the New Orleans Saints this week. The Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills. Denver Broncos and Houston Texans are the other teams trying to sign Thomas with them. But Thomas is not interested in Buffalo Bills or New York Jets as they were unable to qualify for the playoffs in the last season. Patriots believe that Thomas is healthy and will be able to play well this year.

Coach Belichek already looking ahead

Patriots head coach, Bill Belichek, is already looking to the future. He has yet to watch the film of the defeat at the Super Bowl, but he says he will look at it soon to see their defeat and learn from it. He states the team got really close to winning, but something happened and it wasn’t meant to be. He also said it was time to move on and not dwell on on the past, but rather plan for the future next time. Critics also got all over him for leaving the game early in the last final moments. He said he wanted to get over to congratulate the Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin.

He also said that as the last play was finishing that he didn’t pay any attention to the time that was left on the clock. He just started walking away. Looking ahead still to 2008, the Patriots are still at the top of the list of contending teams. They are going to need to work on their battle plans and come up with a good defense to be competitive this year one critic says. They also need to have their offense in a good position as well to take on anything that comes at them.

Veteran linebacker Slaughter to play for the Patriots

T.J Slaughter, a veteran who has played 78 games in seven NFL seasons, has signed a contract to play for the New England patriots. There is no much details let out on the terms of agreement and the Patriots are thrilled by the signing of the 32 game starter into their team. He started his career by playing for the Jaguars in the third round of NFL Draft in 2000 and was with the team till 20003. In 2003, he joined the Green Bay team and has played for Baltimore, New Orleans and San Francisco in 2004, 2005 and 2006 respectively. He took a year off from the season of 2007.

T.J. Slaughter has an impressive career record that includes 358 tackles of which 172 were solo tackles, eight passes defended, 47 special team tackles, one interception and four forced fumbles. The man from Southern Mississippi made a career high 108 tackles in his rookie year for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000 and followed it up with 92 tackles in the 2001 season. T.J. Slaughter has been signed by the New England Patriots as a free agent on 12th February 2008. The Patriots are hoping that his inclusion will further strengthen the defense in the team.

Specter vs. Goodell on Spygate Controversy

It seems Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter is bent on investigating the Patriots’ illegal taping of defensive signals.  Specter and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell are set to meet today, Feb 13 2008, to talk about what is now popularly known as “Spygate.”  The meeting will be held in Senator Specter’s office.  Foremost in their discussion would be about the destruction of the videotapes confiscated from the Patriots during the investigation.  It was Goodell who authorized the tapes to be destroyed.

Coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000.  The Patriots’ first-round pick for this April’s draft was also taken.  Specter likened Goodell’s consenting to destroy the tapes to the CIA destroying interrogation tapes.  He added that the commissioner could be called to appear before the Judiciary Committee to justify his actions.

The NFL went under more fire as the Boston Herald revealed through an anonymous source that the Patriots taped the St. Louis Rams’ practice before Super Bowl XXXVI, which the Patriots won 20-17.  Matt Walsh, Patriots’ former video assistant, adds more injury to New England by disclosing that he could show evidence that would bring even more damage to the team.  Goodell continues to defend the NFL’s stand regarding the Spygate issue, saying that destroying the tapes was a way to make sure that the Patriots had surrendered all evidence to him.  Patriots fans are still having mixed reactions about the issue.

Belichick tenders apology for the sideline spying scandal

The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had slapped the biggest ever fine of $500,000 on a National Football League coach when he found New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick guilty of violating the league rules by secretly videotaping the defensive tactics of the opposing sidelines. The Patriots team also came under the scanner of Roger Goodell as he imposed a hefty penalty of $250,000 on the team and asked them to forfeit the first round match in the 2008 season. Bellichick also issued a one paragraph statement of apology to his players, owners and staff and said that he had spoken about the interpretation of the league rules with Goodell.

In the press conference that followed after the incident leaked, Bellichick again apologized to everyone who were affected by his wrong deeds and was seen to be a totally confused man at the media conference. One of the most successful coaches in the history of the National Football league was seen to be totally upset over the whole issue and did not have any answers for the questions pounded at him by the media people about the scandal. He pleaded to the media to ask questions about the game and said that the statement covers all that he wants to say about the spying scandal.

Ghana, A team to watch out!

Ghana the African tigers are being tipped as favorites for the African Football cup. The mercurial African side has the talent to unsettle even the best in the business so they have the firepower to unsettle Nigeria the traditional Football African giant. The depth of the talent at the disposal of the African management can be realized from the number of Ghana players playing for different football league.

The Black Stars as their fans know the Ghana team does not have a stellar record in FIFA World Cup since the first time only qualified for the first time in 2006 for the world cup. However, they have been performing quite well at the other FIFA tournaments for example the U-17 FIFA competitions; the Ghana U-17 team has twice won the U-17 world cup and has twice been the runners-up of this coveted trophy. The most important statistic, which makes them a very dangerous side for their opponents, is their four-time success at the African Football cup. This record makes them the team with the second best record in this tournament.

The Talent of the Ghana Football team if properly nourished under the guidance of an effective coach can be devastating for all their opponents.

Patriots Vote Neal for Ed Block Courage Award

New England Patriots chose teammate Stephen Neal for the 2007 Ed Block Courage Award. This award is named after Ed Block who was head trainer for the Baltimore Colts and a humanitarian who has set his heart on helping children. This award is usually given to players who have come out victorious over injuries or personal tragedies and have returned in the NFL with excellent performance and tough competition. Neal became part of the Patriots in July 23, 2001 after he retired from wrestling. He was then released by the Patriots, so he spent the rest of the season on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles. In December 12, 2001, he was back in the Patriots’ active roster. However, he sustained shoulder injuries in 2002 and 2003 that largely hindered his performance. Then in 2004, having had just two games in his first three seasons as a professional football player, he started 17 of 19 games. Neal started the Patriots’ three playoff games in 2004, and that year the Patriots finished 17-2 as Super Bowl Champions. In the 2007 season, Neal also dealt with shoulder injuries. He started each game but missed the last four games. He continued to be active, though, and started each of playoff game of the Patriots. The award will be given to Neal along with 31 other awardees on the 29th Annual Ed Block Courage Awards Banquet.
